Curling is around the corner! Important 24-25 season information

Hello Riverdalers,

We’re fast approaching the start of the season, and there’s a few things we’d like to pass along to you. We’re all looking forward to getting on the ice on October 6th.

Beginner’s Clinic and Practice Ice – Oct 5

We will be hosting a free beginner’s clinic at the Royals on Saturday, October 5, starting at 3:15  p.m. This clinic will specifically focus on new members with little or no experience with curling, as well as newer members (with less than two years of experience) who would like to brush up on the basics.

If you have time to volunteer as a coach that day, please email Mark directly at riverdale@pridecurl.ca.

Practice ice will be available after the clinic, at 5:30 p.m., if more experienced members/teams would like an opportunity to get out onto the ice before our first game.

Welcome to our new members!

Welcome to anyone who is joining Riverdale for the first time!

You can find all the information you need on our website – toronto.pridecurl.ca. To access Riverdale information, click on the “Riverdale” link on the left-hand column.

If you have any questions at all, don’t hesitate to reach out to the members of your team or a member of the executive. As a reminder (and so you have a visual on who the executives are), here are the current members of the executive (scroll down).

We hope you have an excellent first season!

No Tick Rule

The Canadian Pride Curling Association has decided that the no tick rule will apply to the 2025 Canadian Pride Curling Championship and beyond. As a result, this rule will be in effect for all Riverdale competitions. The rule is as follows:

If, prior to the delivery of the sixth stone of an end, a delivered stone causes either directly or indirectly, an opposition stone in the Free Guard Zone (FGZ) which is touching the centre line to be moved to an off-centre line position or to a position outside the FGZ, the non-offending team has the option to:

(i) Remove the delivered stone from play, and replace all stones that were displaced to their positions prior to the violation taking place; or

(ii) Leave all stones where they came to rest.

If the stone is moved from the centre line to an out-of-play position, then the FGZ rule applies.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to the drawmaster or other executive members.

Gear Up!

If you’re new to curling, make sure that before the beginning of the season you’re ready to get on the ice for the first time. Your key pieces of curling equipment will be:

  1. Clean shoes – you’ll need shoes with decent grip that are clean. You can’t wear your street shoes on the ice. Avoid dress shoes, heels, boots, or anything that you won’t be able to balance on ice while wearing.
  2. Stretchy pants – you’ll be lunging and squatting a fair bit on the ice, so you’ll likely want to be able to get up and down without tearing your pants or being constricted.
  3. Warm clothes that don’t shed fuzz or glitter – you might warm up while sweeping, but it is an ice surface. Make sure you’ll be warm in clothes that don’t shed, as fuzz and other debris will ruin the ice.
  4. A slider – you may want to get a slider that fits over your shoes and covers your whole sole. If you don’t have one, that’s alright, the club has some to use during your game.
  5. A broom – you might want to get a broom, but you can also use the club-provided brooms as well.

If you have questions, don’t hesitate to reach out to a member of the executive or a more experienced teammate.

Name Tags

As we do every year, members can order name tags to wear on the ice and in the lounge. As of last year, we’ve upgraded to magnetic name tags! If it’s your first year in the league, you can place your request here. If you need a replacement, you may also order one for a fee.

You must order by end of day on Monday October 22nd, with name tags likely delivered to the Club for pick up in mid-November in time for the Rotators bonspiel November 26-27.

Spare List

If you’re looking to find someone to cover a game that you’ll miss, please check out the Spare List (linked inside our protected page). Spare rules are at the top of the list as a guideline to finding a fair spare, and in the orientation guide.

Scheduling

The schedule was shared in the Facebook group, but you can find it here: https://toronto.pridecurl.ca/schedule1/. You’re also able to download your games from the league calendar.  (Search for your team name, then use the subscribe button to download the ICS file. Most phones will offer to add to your calendar at that point.)

Game results must be entered online at toronto.pridecurl.ca/result. QR codes will be placed at the club to scan and take you directly to the website.

Canadian Pride Curling Championship playdowns sign up

Registration for Playdowns for the Canadian Pride Curling Championships is now open. Please send an email to external@pridecurl.ca to register. Registration closes October 27, 2024, and further information on entry fee and exact schedule will be provided to participants shortly thereafter.

We have reserved ice time at the Royals on the afternoons of November 16, December 21, and January 25, and playdown games will be scheduled on some combination of these dates. Please note that the 2025 CPCC, to be held in Edmonton April 3-6, 2025, will occur on the same weekend as Riverdale’s league playoffs.

Looking forward to seeing you on the ice!
